“I’m going to finish my MBA, sell my company, and work there for about two years. You’re going to finish your book and continue building your brand. After that, we’re going to go off to do awesome things.”

These words from Pat Sheridan to Jay Garcia proved prophetic. Exactly two years later in March 2011, they co-founded Modus Create.

Pat and Jay have very different personalities. One has a background in Arts, and the other is an Air Force veteran. But they have one fundamental thing in common: a love for creating things. This shared passion became a part of the company’s DNA, including its very name. It continues to be our edge in an industry traditionally defined by everything but action – consulting.

The two had met for the first time at a Sencha Forum in 2009. Jay was the most active member of the community and Pat approached him to work together. They began consulting at a large enterprise.

In 2009, Pat sold his previous company but continued working with Jay for another year before they went off on separate paths. The two eventually joined forces in 2011 and Modus Create was founded with HQ in Reston, Virginia.

The two founders – Jay and Pat, had worked as consultants before starting the company. Through that work, they witnessed plenty of founders getting in the way of their team’s success. When they started Modus Create, they didn’t make a list of cultural values, but they knew what mistakes the company should avoid. It was an attempt to right the wrongs of traditional consulting, which sells hours instead of outcomes, arbitrage instead of excellence.

Their experience in the open-source world taught them that the internet has changed education. There are knowledgeable technologists, designers, and strategists all over the world. This foundational lesson has powered our journey from employee no. 3 to 300 and beyond. No matter where you are, you can make meaningful contributions at Modus Create and transform your career.

This open source-inspired mindset has been at the heart of Modus Create’s growth over the past decade.

In 2014, just a few years after its inception, Modus Create opened its first international office in Cluj-Napoca, Romania. The next year, it received its first Inc 5000 award, which is awarded to America’s fastest-growing companies.

A Platform for Growth

When our founders were in the early stages of creating the company, they had one thing set in stone. At Modus Create, no one would ever tell you, “That’s not your job”.

In 2019, Modus Create opened its second international office in San Jose, Costa Rica. In 2020, Inc Magazine rated Modus Create as one of America’s fastest-growing companies for the sixth consecutive year. FlexJobs rated it as one of the world’s top companies for remote work.
