In clinical research, even a minor lapse in data infrastructure can jeopardize trial integrity or invite regulatory fallout. For one fast-growing clinical research technology firm, such risks were growing by the day.

Years of rapid expansion had resulted in a patchwork AWS environment: fragile, fragmented, and increasingly difficult to manage. Tool sprawl, inconsistent security practices, and architectural drift had created serious vulnerabilities in handling sensitive patient data.

The company knew it couldn’t continue scaling on unstable infrastructure. The data architecture needed a reset.

Challenge

Security risks and compliance pressure

Over time, the clinical research company’s AWS environment had grown organically, resulting in an increasingly fragile foundation. The company performed a DevSecOps audit that revealed serious security vulnerabilities, threatening the safety of sensitive patient data and putting regulatory compliance at risk.

Manual controls and fragmented infrastructure code made consistent enforcement nearly impossible. With operations spanning multiple regions, the firm also needed tighter control over geographic data residency to comply with global privacy laws.

Data ingestion pipelines were vulnerable to failure, raising the risk of losing clinical trial data during processing. Meanwhile, fragmented Terraform practices introduced inefficiencies and weakened deployment integrity.

Solution

A modern, secure cloud infrastructure with AWS

Modus Create’s team of AWS experts joined the clinical research firm to design and implement a cloud modernization strategy focused on security, operational efficiency, and data resilience.

1. Modernizing security governance

The engagement began with a strategic security roadmap that addressed immediate vulnerabilities while establishing a governance foundation for the future. We consolidated security tooling, enabling centralized visibility and removing redundant systems.

Using AWS Config, Amazon GuardDuty, and Amazon Macie, the team introduced real-time monitoring, threat detection, and automated protection for sensitive data. All infrastructure changes were funneled through version-controlled Terraform, eliminating manual access and ensuring traceability.

2. Optimizing infrastructure and automation

Next, the team modernized the Terraform codebase, aligning it with AWS best practices and creating reusable modules for greater efficiency. The new CI/CD pipeline integrated security validation directly into the deployment process, improving consistency while reducing manual effort.

This standardized approach to infrastructure helped eliminate configuration drift and significantly accelerated environment provisioning.

3. Creating a resilient and compliant data architecture

After auditing the existing data flows, we implemented region-based data partitioning to meet international privacy regulations. A key shift involved migrating from Amazon RDS to Amazon Aurora, which reduced costs while improving query speed by 30%.

The rollout of a message queuing architecture brought fault tolerance to the platform’s data ingestion pipeline. Now, even during service disruptions, the system can recover gracefully without data loss—a vital improvement for clinical research integrity.

Impact

A safer and smarter platform for clinical trials

The transformation improved every major performance and governance metric:

  • Security monitoring coverage jumped from 60% to over 95%
  • Remediation time dropped by 35%
  • Compliance reporting became 40% faster
  • Monthly cloud spend decreased by up to $30,000
  • Database performance improved by 30%
  • Deployment times for new environments were cut by 70%
  • Infrastructure incidents dropped by 50% in just six months

Most notably, data processing failures plummeted from 2% to under 0.1%, and the platform scaled to support 40% more users without performance loss, paving the way for larger, more complex clinical trials.

With a secure, modern, and scalable AWS foundation in place, the clinical research firm is now exploring advanced analytics with machine learning, mobile-first clinical trials, and expanded global reach powered by AWS’s regional infrastructure.
